The term midwife, meaning "with a woman" was first recorded in 1300. Historically, the major role of midwives was to provide care to women during normal pregnancy and delivery.

Paragon's Certified Nurse-Midwives are registered nurses who have received advanced training in women’s health and midwifery. Paragon’s Certified Nurse-Midwives have earned a master’s degree from an educational institute accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. They have also passed a national certification examination.

Today, Certified Nurse-Midwives write prescriptions and provide a variety of services, including:

• Prenatal care
• Labor & delivery care
• Care after birth
• Disease prevention
• Family planning assistance
• Gynecological exams
• Health maintenance counseling
• Menopausal management
• Preconception care

Possibly one of the best-known features of nurse-midwifery is the
commitment to facilitating uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery. Certified Nurse-Midwives are especially skilled at using alternative birthing positions, birthing balls, hydrotherapy, and massage. Their supportive presence during labor allows them to utilize and encourage these alternatives with women.
